How are cysts formed?
Epidermal cyst (epidermal cyst, epidermoid cyst) is a common benign skin tumor caused by:
When the epidermal cells in the outermost layer of the skin accidentally run into the dermis and continue to grow, they will form a sac with epidermal cells attached inside, in which old keratin substances continue to accumulate and eventually become a tumor visible to the naked eye.
What causes cysts?
- Trauma, abrasions, and scrapes that damage the skin barrier
- Greasy diet, disordered work and rest schedule, smoking and other lifestyle habits
- Areas with high oil secretion: face, earlobes, behind the ears, neck, back, buttocks
- It is related to physical constitution, and some people are more likely to develop
- Excessive intake of high-fat foods may also be a triggering factor

How do cysts come about? Is it related to cleanliness?
The main reason for the formation of cysts (epidermoid cysts) is that the epidermal cells run into the dermis and continue to grow, forming a sac containing keratin. It is not simply caused by insufficient cleaning!
It can vary in size, from 0.5 cm to 2–3 cm. In the early stages, it looks like a small raised bump on the skin, which is usually painless and non-itchy, but sometimes has an odor.
If not treated or removed, cysts usually do not disappear on their own. Instead, they may gradually grow larger and even become infected and inflamed.
How do beauticians identify cysts?
As a beautician, I am particularly sensitive to "acne" and often encounter clients who cannot tell the difference between acne and cysts.
Although pimples are not dangerous diseases, if they occur on the face, it is still recommended to discuss with a doctor whether they need to be removed. However, there is a premise for this matter - removal may leave scars, which is a problem that every beauty-conscious person must think about.
So, if your cyst is hidden, invisible, and not growing, I would recommend that you just live with it. There is no need to rush to treat it unless it causes obvious trouble.
Perhaps my observation and experience are not worse than that of doctors, but we look at things from a different angle - I look at appearance and quality of life, not medical risks.
